We Won! Grant Announcement

A-KEEP is proud to announce that we have been awarded two grants totaling $12,200.00 from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA). This is our fifth year successfully writing innovative ideas for cultural events that bridge Alabama and Korean art forms.

ASCA’s mission strives to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality for all Alabamians by providing support for the State’s diverse and rich artistic resources. The award is for A-KEEP to present in June 2023, our annual community-based theatrical production called The Robin Hood of Korea: Hong Gildong and offer educational workshops for secondary students and community members. They will learn theater techniques and acquire some Korean language which will bring practical application to Korean traditional dances and other international customs.

The Story of Hong Gildong,” is the first Korean translation to be published as a Penguin Classic novel. This Korean folktale parallels the story of the main character of Robin Hood, who is an outlaw who becomes a hero.

Mrs. Dickson, who is currently the drama teacher for Alabama Christian Academy, will be the screenwriter and director again. See our 2022 production and watch an interpretation of a Korean folktale with Indian traditional dances, and drama by your local actors with Alabama-Korea Education and Economic Partnership's virtual production - AKEEP Presents "The Fairy and the Lumberjack | Live Theater Performance - YouTube
