Learn Hangul With A-KEEP!

A-KEEP is hosting A Hangul Learning Event This Summer!

You Don’t Want To Miss Out!

This June, A-KEEP is hosting our “Learn Hangul” event at LEAD Academy. This event will provide fun and interactive ways to help the community learn to read and write Hangul. The event activities, a mixture of academics and culture, were chosen to help participants get a step closer to Korean learning. These activities allow for participants to retain more information through multisensory learning.

Hangul is the name of the Korean alphabet that was first created in 1443 by King Sejong. The need for the new writing system arose from the lack of literacy in Korea during the Joseon dynasty. Because Korea did not have its own writing system, those who were literate in Korea at the time wrote in Hanja, Chinese characters, despite the languages being grammatically different. Using Hanja to write in Korean was a difficult task that only the elites were capable of. The simple design of the new writing system, Hangul, was purposeful since it now allowed the common people to gain literacy, which would improve the country according to King Sejong. The alphabet now consists of only 14 consonants and 10 vowels, totaling 24 letters. Today, Hangul is the official writing system in Korea.

A wise man can acquaint himself with them [Hangul] before the morning is over; a fool can learn them in the space of ten days.
— King Sejong

Each year, the Hangul alphabet is celebrated as a national holiday in South Korea on October 9th and is referred to as 한글날 (Hangulnal).

If you are interested in improving your Korean skills or are interested in trying a new foreign language, then this event is perfect for you! A-KEEP's "Learn Hangul" event will be hosted on Thursday, June 23rd 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at LEAD Academy and is open to the community.
